The sculpture that I’m proposing is a tribute to freedom, where I use the stone and my sculptural
work to represent collaborative strength as an ascension to the state of “being free”.
Formed, as a whole, based on the narrative of the past, present and future, this piece has the
same historical meaning as April 25th, the day of the revolution in Portugal. This is one of the
most important days celebrated in the country,
This evolutionary process also contains the story of a nation that saw the possibility of freeing
itself from Salazar’s dictates through unity, cooperative spirit and mutual help.
From the screaming collective desire to be free to exist and create, a collaborative platform was
formed that culminated in the apogee of the April 25th revolution.
The context of celebrating the 50th anniversary, on April 25th of 2024, serves as a lever to reinforce
the fundamental idea that in order to create we must be free and that, in order to be free,
we must support each other. Each oval shape of this marble stone is born as an unit that can
only exist in interaction and relationship with other units, in a kind of unified sculptural whole.
These units can easily adapt to a roughly shaped block, where I can play with the different textures
to create a unique interaction between the harshness and polish of the stone.
In this piece, the units relate to each other forming a compact column, conveying the idea of
interdependence and praising the role of mutual help for the possibility of “flying” and being
free. They can then let go and freely follow in other directions.
From the “unbearable lightness” of being a sculptor, I use my hands and rely on my machines,
but I cannot imagine a creative process that did not originate in the context of freedom of
thought and expression.
